Luoyang
洛阳
Cradle of Chinese civilization
While tourists flock to Xi'an, Luoyang quietly hosts the most spectacular Buddhist art in Asia, the best peonies in China, and a old town that feels untouched by tourism.
Luoyang was China's capital for 13 dynasties - longer than any other city. The Longmen Grottoes contain 100,000 Buddhist statues carved into cliffsides. The old town serves water banquet feasts that haven't changed in centuries. This is deep China, where Buddhism first took root, where the peony is worshipped every April, and where locals are genuinely surprised to see foreign faces.
